How we work

We do not intervene for aesthetics. We do it to guarantee durability. The Ondarezaintza Method intervenes on each stage in the support, water and structure — the real causes of Basque farmhouse deterioration, not their symptoms.

From degraded structure to sustainable system — Ondarezaintza Method

Initial diagnosis — damp stains on facade, invasive vegetation, uncontrolled watercourse and neglected natural pond

Diagnosis

Structural reading — the real condition of the farmhouse

  • Damp stains and ageing on stone facade — uncontrolled water

  • Thickets and invasive vegetation around perimeter — root pressure on walls

  • Uncontrolled watercourse — rudimentary channeling without slope logic

  • Neglected pond — accumulation area without controlled outlet

Residue-free intervention

Natural products for intervention

Steel&Stone KET does not apply products for the sake of it. The Ondarezaintza Method requires diagnosis first. Then, only if necessary, we intervene, knowing what we do, where we do it and why.

Minimum intervention principle

Prior diagnosis. Conscious intervention.

Product selection is decided after the technical diagnosis, guaranteeing maximum effectiveness with minimum impact on the environment, materials and people.

Linseed oil applied on old wood — natural consolidant

Origin

Flax seed (Linum usitatissimum)

Mechanism of action

Penetrates deep into wood, polymerises on oxidation and creates a physical barrier that prevents moisture absorption and colonisation by xylophagous fungi and insects.

Applications

  • Consolidation of degraded wood
  • Preventive protection of beams and structures
  • Compatible with historic wood and traditional varnishes
Heritage · Inhabited spaces
Diatomaceous earth applied in structural joints — natural mechanical insecticide

Origin

Fossilised algae (Diatoms)

Mechanism of action

Mineral dust of fossil origin with micro-abrasive structure. On contact it damages the insect cuticle, causing dehydration and death without chemical toxicity. Acts mechanically, not biochemically.

Applications

  • Woodworm and termite control
  • Treatment of cracks and joints in timber structures
  • Application in hard-to-access areas
No residue · Heritage
Boric acid applied on old wood — natural structural protection

Origin

Natural mineral (hydrogen borate)

Mechanism of action

Acts on the energy metabolism of fungi and insects by blocking ATP synthesis. Penetrates wood and acts as a broad-spectrum biocide with low toxicity for mammals and no persistent residues.

Applications

  • Curative treatment of rot fungi
  • Subterranean termite control
  • Protection of structures in damp areas
Low toxicity · Historic wood
Sodium orthoborate applied by injection — natural systemic treatment

Origin

Natural borate mineral (natural borax)

Mechanism of action

Water-soluble borate salt that diffuses through wood and acts as a systemic biocide. Inhibits fungal growth and xylophagous insect activity. Especially effective in immersion and injection treatments.

Applications

  • Injection treatment of beams
  • Protection of new wood before installation
  • Reinforcement of treatments with boric acid
Systemic · Deep diffusion
Essential oils applied on heritage structure — biodegradable repellent

Origin

Aromatic plants (thyme, clove, cinnamon, neem…)

Mechanism of action

Terpenic compounds with repellent, insecticidal and fungistatic activity. Act on the insect nervous system and alter fungal cell membranes. Degrade naturally in the environment without leaving residues.

Applications

  • Preventive repellent for exposed structures
  • Surface treatment in inhabited spaces
  • Application in heritage buildings under protection
